I saw quite a few fields in central and eastern North Dakota over the long holiday weekend.
Some of what I saw was encouraging: wheat poking through the soil, corn and soybeans being planted — late for corn, though not quite dangerously so.
Some of what I saw was discouraging: sloppy-wet fields that have little, if any, chance of being planted this year.
The Upper Midwest is a big place. Inevitably, planting progress varies across the region. But I haven’t seen many springs where the planting pace is as varied as it this year.
