My Christmas wish a year ago was the end of drought across the Upper Midwest.
By and large, that wish was granted. Moisture conditions were far from perfect in 2013, but regionwide drought wasn’t a problem.
To be sure, the past year brought many challenges: the wet spring, the dry late summer, declining crop prices and the devastasting fall blizzard in the western Dakotas. It will take years for livestock producers hurt by the blizzard to recover fully.
On balance, however, aggies in the Upper Midwest made money.in 2013. Early projections indicate most have a realistic crack at making a few bucks in 2014, too.
My Christmas wish this year is that area agriculturalists can continue to earn a living doing what they enjoy.
From all of us at Agweek, Merry Christmas.
