Credit Where Credit’s Due

I haven’t watched “The Simpsons” TV show in many years. But I remember an episode in which Homer heckles a baseball manager. Marge, his wife, scolds him, saying, “You know, Homer, it’s very easy to criticize.” To which Homer smugly responds, “Fun, too.”

Many of us in the Upper Midwest take that approach with weather forecasters. When their predictions are wrong, we quickly and gladly point it out. But we’re slower and more reluctant to acknowledge their successes.

So let’s credit the experts for their forecast of a cool, wet May. They nailed it. Unfortunately. Like other area agriculturalists, I wanted warmer, drier conditions that would have boosted the planting pace. No, we didn’t get our wish. But that shouldn’t obscure how well the forecasters did their job.
